GRAND RAPIDS, MI – MSU Grandparents University is an opportunity for grandparents and grandchildren (ages 8-12) to come together for a three-day educational experience while spending time together on the MSU campus.
Participants enjoy the college experience of living in the residence halls, attending classes across campus and sampling the many highlights of MSU. Grandparents University gives alumni a chance to relive their college days while exploring campus and creating lifelong memories with their grandchildren.
Grandparents University is organized by the alumni relations professionals in the different colleges and units across campus. The program is self-supporting and relies entirely on the registration fees to cover all expenses.
The School of Packaging has been supporting the program since its inception. This year, the School of Packaging decided to insert another activity that they’ve created – the Egg Drop Contest. The students (grandparents and grandchildren) get the same packaging products and are challenged to design and produce a package that will protect a raw egg for a 20 foot drop. The drops are measured for speed and damage. The attached photos show corrugated boxes and sheets that Pratt – Grand Rapids donated for the event. Doug Merian (Clorox – member of the MSU School of Packaging Alumni Board) wrote this thank you:
Hi Suzanne,
I wanted to thank you for the donation from Pratt Industries to help the Egg Drop Activity at the MSU Grandparents University. The corrugated boxes and board were creatively incorporated into the various package designs. One group even made a parachute with the flat sheet of corrugated board to help their egg float safely to the ground! The event was a huge success and we were one of two activities to have all of our available spots filled with participants. It was a great to see all the creative ideas the kids developed to protect their egg. This was a great way for kids to learn hands-on about what packaging is all about. I think we have a new batch of MSU Packagers to be!
